Pope Leo XIII, Gioacchino Vincenzo Pecci, was pope from 20th February 1878 until 20th July 1903. As Papal Nuncio in Belgium, he knew Dominic and said of him: “Father Dominic had a great reputation in Belgium and England. He was a man much given to prayer and most exemplary in his conduct as a Christian, a religious, a priest and a missionary. He was really a man of God.”

– The Passionists, Felix Ward, C.P., p. 91
