Like a straw mattress …

I would like you to walk in the service of God with great cheerfulness, with great trust. I want you to let yourself fall into the hands of God and to rest in the divine bosom of your heavenly Father. Your deficiencies and weaknesses ought to make you humble but you should also throw all of them into the fire of the love of God were they will be devoured and consumed like a straw mattress thrown into a great furnace. There it’s consumed with not even so much as a shadow remaining.

Letters of St. Paul of the Cross, L. I, 496
