John Henry Newman and the Passionists

The Superior General, Fr. Ottaviano D’Egidio, C.P., has written to Passionists in preparation for the Beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman.

Fr. Ottaviano writes, “While already a pastor and well known Anglican theologian and professor at Oxford University, Newman entered the Catholic Church in 1845 with the assistance of Passionist Blessed Dominic Barberi…”

With all due respect to the Superior General, is it really accurate to say that Bl. Dominic had “great respect toward the other churches”? I believe that Bl. Dominic loved his separated brethren, yet I find it doubtful that he “respected” the schismatic and heretical sects to which they had regrettably attached themselves. The Bl. Dominic who penned the “Lamentation of England” would surely have no truck with the indifferentism that all too often passes for “ecumenism” in our day.

In regards to your Fr. General’s letter,

    1) George (Ignatius} Spencer visited Oxford and asked to meet with Newman, he was sent away. Newman refused to see him. Newman was opposed to Spencer’s “Crusade of Prayer for England” and considered Spencer, in loco apostax. This is detailed in his Apologia.

    2) The Fr. General seems to imply that the Catholic Church is one of those denominations.

3)In regards to Cardinal Newman’s “Episcopal” motto, Newman was never a bishop.

Hey there this is kind of of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG
editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a
blog soon but have no coding skills so I wanted to
get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!
