FROM THE SPIRITUAL CONFERENCES FOR PASSIONIST NOVICES BY BLESSED BERNARD MARY SILVESTRELLI, C.P.

In as much as we are obliged to be a companion of our suffering Jesus, to commiserate with him in his pains and to honour him in his Passion, and if we are especially obliged to be steeped in this devotion and acquire the capacity to impress it on others, it necessarily follows that we are also obliged to use the proper and indispensable means to attain this end. Now, what more efficacious means is there than prayer? I mean prayer which assiduously and tenaciously meditates on this great mystery of a God who has suffered and died for love of us? Here, then, is the logical consequence of our vocation. God has called us to be Passionists.

Therefore, we must be ever attentive to be genuine devotees of the Lord’s Passion, intimate companions of our suffering Jesus, sincere and fervent lovers of the Crucified. Thus, we must meditate on the Passion to acquire those lights which will help us to know the profound mysteries that are hidden in the Passion of Christ, and, at the same time, draw from it those motives which can inflame our heart in holy love.
