The Stranger in our Midst – 13 September

14 September, 2017

THEME | AND WHO IS MY NEIGHBOUR?

Feast of St. John Chrysostom

(quoted in today’s homily by Fr. John Kearns, C.P., Provincial of St. Joseph’s Province)

“Do you wish to honour the body of Christ? Do not ignore him when he is naked. Do not pay homage in the temple clad in silk, only to neglect him outside where he is cold and Ill-clad. He who said, “This is my body” is the same one who said “You saw me hungry and you gave me food” and “Whatever you did to the least of my brothers and sisters you did to me…” What good is it if the Eucharistic table is overloaded with gold chalices when you brother or sister is dying of hunger? Start by satisfying that hunger and then with what is left you may adorn the altar as well.” | St. John Chrysostom |

Fr. Mirek Leiski, C.P., Passionist Representative at the United Nations, presented “A United Nations Perspective”.

“Today we are invited to reflect on four words: “who is my neighbour?” It is a daunting challenge we face in the context of the mounting political crisis over migration, the plight of refugees, smuggling networks and border deaths, and the unleashing of violence against particular communities”.

“Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some people have entertained angels without knowing it” Hebrews 13:2

Almighty and merciful God, whose Son became a refugee and had no place to call his own; look with mercy on those who today are fleeing from danger, homeless and hungry. Bless those who work to bring them relief; inspire generosity and compassion in all our hearts; and guide the nations of the world towards that day when all will rejoice in your kingdom of justice and of peace. Amen.
