Denis was elected to the General Council on Tuesday, 17th October 2006. He was also elected First Consultor, or Vicar General of the Passionists.

Election of General Council and Vicar General

The General Chapter today elected the General Council for the Passionist Congregation 2006 – 2012.

Those elected were Fr Luis Alberto Cano Seijo (Spain) with 60 votes, Fr Clemente Barrone (USA) with 59 votes, Fr Denis Travers (Australia) with 58 votes and Fr Luigi Vaninetti (Italy) with 48 votes.

Fr Denis Travers was then elected First Consultor.   This is the first time in the history of the Passionists that an Australian has served as First Consultor, or Vicar General of the Congregation.

The Vatican News Service today (Tuesday 17th October 2006) announced –

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop William Kenney C.P., auxiliary of the diocese of Stockholm, Sweden, as auxiliary of the archdiocese of Birmingham (area 8,735, population 5,245,000, Catholics 286,442, priests 358, permanent deacons 76, religious 705), Great Britain.

General Council Elections Tuesday 17th October

Today the General Chapter will elect members of the General Council.

“The General Chapter elects at least four Consultors according to the norms of the General Regulations. They constitute the General Council and assist the Superior General in dealing with the affairs of the Congregation.” (Constitutions #135)
